Burlington County 6, Tri-Cape 2

PHILADELPHIA, PA--Third time is the charm.  After falling in the Carpenter Cup championship game in 1993 and 1986, Burlington finally won its first title in the 21-year history of the tournament, defeating Tri-Cape 6-2 on Friday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.  Tri-Cape (3-1) fell to 0-6 in championship games in the tournament.

For BURLCO (4-0), Cinnaminson High senior Shawn Sanford who was drafted in the major league draft by the Texas Rangers, started and picked up his first win of the tournament, going three shutout innings, recording five strikeouts.  Lenape High senior Sean Black, drafted by the Washington Nationals went the next three innings, throwing shutout ball, recording three strikeouts.  Overall, Burlington recorded 12 strikoeuts in the game and recorded 46 strikeouts in the four games of the tournament.  Tri-Cape scored a run in the seventh inning, breaking Burlington's streak of 16 innings of shutout pitching, dating back to the ninth inning of the second game of the tournament against SOL National/Bicentennial.

In the tournament, Burlington defeated Lehigh Valley 8-2, SOL/National Bicentennial 7-6 and Chester County 16-0 enroute to the championship game.

Pemberton High senior Dan Hayduk hit a two-run single in the first inning as Burlington jumped out to a 4-0 lead.  Hayduk had six hits in the four games, with four runs scored and eight RBI.

Senior Rob DeVenney (Holy Cross H.S.) also had six hits in the tournament for Burlington with three runs scored.  Burlington outscored the opposition 37-10 overall.
