25th Carpenter Cup - Semifinals
High School All-Star Baseball
Jersey Shore 4, Burlington County 0

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Burlington County Carpenter Cup run came to an end, without a run, as Jersey Shore used three pitchers for a combined three-hitter, recording 15 strikeouts in the 4-0 semifinal game on Monday at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Senior Dillon O'Neal (Riverside), junior Taylor Steen (New Egypt) and senior Jesse Revenis (Delran) each had singles for Burlco, who was the defending tournament champion.  O'Neal (6/8) and Steen (3/4) each batted .750 in the tournament with O'Neal hitting three doubles and scoring three times.

The two New Jersey franchises battled each other and 95 degree heat and high humidity to remain scoreless after the first six innings.  Seneca junior Kevin Comer started and pitched three shutout innings, allowing only one hit while walking three.  Comer recorded two strikeouts.  Rancocas Valley junior Devon Hedgepeth scattered two hits and a walk but recorded two strikeouts in his three scoreless innings of work.

After Burlington County (2-1) was retired in the seventh, Jersey Shore (3-0) responded with four unearned runs, capitalizing on two Burlco errors while sending eight batters to the plate.  Bordentown senior Tommy Potts lasted two-thirds, allowing two hits in the fateful inning.  Lenape senior Tory Schroff recorded the final out of the seventh with Moorestown senior Tyler Harris working a scoreless eighth, allowing only one hit.

There have now been 27 shutouts in the 339 games of the 25-year tournament, with Burlington County involved in eight of them (4-4 record).

Burlco drops to 27-23 in its 50th game of the tournament and is now 3-3 all-time against Jersey Shore (Ocean/Monmouth).  Burlco defeated Jersey Shore 10-5 in the quarterfinals last season and 3-0 in the 2004 opening round.  The J/S franchise, then know as Ocean/Monmouth, won 13-10 in the opening round at Veterans Stadium in 2001 and 6-5 in the 1995 opening round.  The teams first met in 1993 semifinals with Burlington County posting a 12-8 win.

As a team, Burlington County batted .306 in the three games but was held to 3/30 (.100) against Jersey Shore.  J/S pitching has allowed only two runs in three games with a team earned run average of 0.67.  This was the second year in a row, third time in five years and fourth time in seven years that Burlington County has advanced to the final four of the 16-team single elimination tournament.  Burlco won its other title in 2006.  Burlington County is now 4-4 all-time in eight semifinal appearances.

The second 2010 semifinal, featuring Suburban National/Bicentennial against Suburban American & Continental was stopped after an eight minute delay due to heavy rain in the bottom of the seventh with SOL-N leading 4-3.  The game will be resumed Tuesday at 10:00am with SOL-A batting, a runner on first, no one out and a 1-0 count on the hitter.

The championship game has been pushed back to Wednesday at 2:00pm, also at Citizens Bank Park.
