26th Annual Carpenter Cup - Championship Game
Lehigh Valley 5, Burlington County 3
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Burlington County Carpenter Cup team played for its second championship in three seasons and third title in six years but could not overcome Lehigh Valley, falling 5-3 on Tuesday in the final game of the 26th annual Carpenter Cup, at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Lehigh Valley (4-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on two walks and a wild pitch by Kevin Boswick (Shawnee).
Burlington County (3-1) responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, two runs on a home run by Kevin McMenamin (Maple Shade) with the third run scoring on two Lehigh Valley errors.
The McMenamin home run to right center was the 11th in Burlco franchise history and the first since Tyler Powell homered for Burlington County in 2009.
Lehigh Valley tied the game at three in the fourth inning on a bases loaded double with the potential lead run thrown out at the plate.
A lead off double and one-out RBI single put Lehigh Valley ahead 4-3 in the fifth inning and LV plated its fifth run of the day in the ninth inning on an error.
Burlco threatened in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings but were turned away with Lehigh Valley turning three double plays.
Also for Burlington County, Taylor Steen (New Egypt), Vince Corbi (Shawnee), Devon Hedgepeth (Rancocas Valley) and Craig Joseph (Cherokee) each singled with Jeff McGarry (Lenape) adding a double.
Burlington County (30-24) was making its fifth championship game appearance, winning the title in 2006 and 2009.
