Riverside Hall of Fame will induct eight

The Riverside High School Sports Hall of Fame will induct eight former athletes on Oct. 29 at the Kove II in Edgewater Park.

Tickets for the induction dinner are $35 each and may be obtained by calling Bernie Smith at (856) 461-4868 or Buddy Micucci at (856) 461-1255.

Following are capsules of the inductees:

William Bentcliff (Class of 1962): Member of Riverside's South Jersey Group 2 championships football teams in 1958 and 1961. All-Burlington County as a junior and senior; All-South Jersey as a senior. Also competed in track and field, and set the school record for the 880-yard run that stood for 12 years.

Mark Briggs (1988): Played football, basketball and baseball, earning eight varsity letters. Made All-Burlington County League Freedom and All-Group 1 in basketball as a senior, and scored more than 1,000 points. In baseball, made All-Freedom Division, All-County and All-South Jersey, and played in the Carpenter Cup for top players in the tri-state area.

Greg Davidson (1992): Earned 11 varsity letters, four each in soccer and baseball. Served as team captain in soccer and made All-Freedom Division, All-County and All-Group 1 as a junior and senior. Also made all-star teams in baseball, a sport he played for four years at La Salle University. Joined fellow inductee Joe Dorety in helping Riverside win the Freedom title in 1992.

Joe Dorety (1992): Played soccer, basketball and baseball, earning eight varsity letters. Made all-star teams in baseball and helped the Rams win the Freedom Division championship as a senior. Played baseball for Rider University and was a pitcher for three conference championship teams. Set team records for season and career relief appearances at Rider.

Bob Hermansky (1995): Earned 10 varsity letters while competing in football, wrestling and baseball. Served as team captain in all three sports and made all-Freedom in all three. When he graduated, he was second all-time in wins (65) for the wrestling program despite being curtailed by injuries as a senior. Helped Riverside win the Freedom baseball title as a senior. Overcame injuries and played baseball at Albright College.

Bruce Lazaruk (1970): Played football, basketball and baseball; eight varsity letters. All-County and All-South Jersey in baseball. Also an all-star in football before suffering a leg injury. Played baseball at Glassboro State College and was the starting first baseman for two New Jersey Athletic Conference championship teams. As a football coach, guided Hammonton to the Cape-Atlantic League championship in 1983 and Rancocas Valley to the South Jersey Group 3 title in 1987. Has been Riverside's football coach for the past 12 years.

Margaret Maute (1953): Played field hockey and basketball. Named top female athlete in her senior class. Averaged 17.4 points per game in basketball, a school record until Jen Slough broke it in the 1995-96 season. Excelled in women's basketball leagues after high school. Is being inducted posthumously.

Nancy Pippitt Repetto (1988): Eight varsity letters in three sports. Pitcher and catcher for a softball team that reached the South Jersey Group 1 championship game. All-star in field hockey and softball. Played field hockey at Shippensburg (Pa.) University and was the starting goaltender for four years. Set school record for saves in a game. Later served as an assistant coach at Shippensburg.
